Shpongle San Jose Concert reviews
Ray LaMontagne at the Greek - waning interest?
With high expectations, I went to this show featuring Shpongle after hearing him for several years on the indie stations. His raspy, unique voice was something I liked. He started with 5-6 ballads, all sung with passion, showcasing that delicious voice (though there were moments when he struggled to hit the big notes, sounding almost hoarse). The addition of 'My Morning Jacket' during the show seemed to lead Shpongle to drift away from the audience, playing music with his buddies. The band itself was fine, but it felt like the engagement with the audience was lacking - no banter, no response to the calls. He did stand up and share a (seemingly rehearsed) story about his first L.A. experience, but his delivery was barely audible (again, hoarse?). It quickly became monotonous, as if there was a one-way window where we could see him, but he was oblivious to our presence. I would have preferred buying a couple of my favorite tracks on iTunes and enjoying them at home instead. I stayed until the end but left before the encore, losing interest in the show - it seemed like he did too.
